A Look Back: Rule of Rose

Rule of Rose is a PS2 survival horror game that sparked quite a bit of controversy when it was released in 2006 due to its depiction of violence and sexuality between several young girls. It stars a 19-year-old woman named Jennifer who has suddenly found herself in a place where children make the rules. Unfortunately, the ones in charge, a group of young girls who form what they call the Red Crayon Aristocrats, are some of the most cruel and sadistic children she has ever met. Jennifer agrees to do their bidding while secretly searching for clues that could lead to her escape.

story description from the official site:

1930s, England. The year that marked the start of the age of the great zeppelins. A mysterious story is spreading among the children in one town. "The Park is dangerous after dark. You'll be eaten by stray dogs. People who are eaten are confined to a zeppelin in the sky and can never leave."

While riding on a bus down a moonlit country road, Jennifer encounters a mysterious boy who hands her a storybook...

She follows the boy, but soon finds herself in the middle of the woods.

She arrives in a world ruled by young girls who call themselves the "Red Crayon Aristocrats."

Voice of an Unseen Boy: "Every month you'll need to find a gift and bring it to the Aristocrat Club. If you don't, I'll kill you. I am a Prince. Therefore, I can order you around. There are really only two kinds of people in the world: those who take orders, and those who give them."

Jennifer pretends to abide by the "Rule of Rose," a class system established by the children, but meanwhile, she's desperately searching for a way out of this world.

When innocent play crosses the line to the unthinkable, she's plunged into despair. She can't understand the children's cruelty, nor can she make sense of her surroundings.

Let the game begin, dear Jennifer!
